Interview: How Sarah Chen Makes $8K/Month Writing About Urban Gardening
Sarah quit her product management job to write about container gardening. 18 months later, she's replaced her salary and her waitlist has 400 people.
How it started
"I started the blog because I couldn't find good information about growing food in a 400 square foot apartment. Everything online assumed you had a backyard." Sarah Chen started The Balcony Farm in early 2024 with zero readers and no monetization plan.
The first dollar
Six months in, a reader emailed asking if she'd do a virtual consultation. Sarah charged $75 for an hour. She did four consultations that month. "I realized the audience I'd built had real, specific problems I could solve — not just as content but as a service."
The membership launch
When she launched paid memberships at $9/month, 200 free subscribers converted on day one. "I was terrified nobody would pay. I had 2,100 free subscribers and assumed most of them would just unsubscribe." The opposite happened — the paid tier added accountability that made her write better.
The product line
Today Sarah sells: memberships ($9/month, $79/year), a $49 digital seed guide, a $129 course on balcony composting, and seasonal group calls included with annual membership. Monthly revenue: $8,200 on average.
